India even openly reacted in the United Nations and condemned Pakistan for its move that it labeled ‘spreading falsehoods’; this was after Pakistan referred to Jammu and Kashmir in a peaceful operation at the United Nations debate on peacekeeping.
Sudhanshu Trivedi, Member of the Rajya Sabha and National Spokesperson of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), got an opportunity to reply to Pakistan at the UN General Assembly Special Political and Decolonisation Fourth Committee session.
Trivedi said that the establishment of this forum was aimed at diverting Pakistan’s agenda of the assembly as it tried to discuss Jammu and Kashmir. He also assured that Jammu and Kashmir “was, is, and will always remain an integral part of India” and repeated Indian position on the matter.
Trivedi also pointed out that in a very recent period, the people of Jammu and Kashmir have voted in the elections and come out to choose their representatives, evidencing democracy in the Union Territory.
Trivedi called on Pakistan to stop its verbal warfare and distortion; he said that nothing can change the status or fact of Jammu and Kashmir. He also appreciated the role of the UN forum and said India would not respond to further tirades from Pakistan that seek to ‘misuse’ the UN and its processes.
The exchange happened when Pakistan made a note of an issue about the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP), an organization aimed at observing ceasefire breaches along the LoC. India replied with the same argument that UNMOGIP had become irrelevant primarily since it lost its relevance when, in 1972 the ceasefire line was replaced by the Line of Control through the Simla Agreement.
India’s response was equally firm and reiterated the country’s stands on maintaining peace and security in Jammu and Kashmir, focusing on the negation of Pakistan’s efforts to take this issue to the international level.
