The recent wave of energy infrastructure attacks that have taken place in the Gulf region were vehemently denounced by India on Thursday as tensions intensify in the West Asian region. The Ministry of External Affairs termed the strikes as highly alarming, and it said it is highly unstable to attack civilian and energy installations, which only enhances an already unstable regional and global energy situation. India demanded that such attacks should be immediately halted so as to avoid further disruption.

The denunciation is issued after the consecutive retaliatory attacks of Iran on the energy facilities of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE, and Kuwait. Such attacks came as a retaliation to Israel attacking the South Pars gas field of Iran, which is part of the largest gas deposits in the world. The reaction of Iran was aimed at the critical energy infrastructure, such as the Ras Laffan liquefied natural gas plant in Qatar, refineries in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, and gas plants in the UAE, which resulted in massive damage and fires.

The MEA statement makes it clear that India has continuously called on all parties not to target civilian infrastructures, such as energy assets, because the effects of these attacks extend far beyond the local level, to the international one as well. The increasing number of attacks has intensified the energy security issue across the globe because the Gulf countries are the biggest providers of oil and gas.

The attacks provoked a counter blow by a coalition of Arab and Islamic nations which released a joint statement criticizing the attacks pointing out the dangers they cause to the stability in the region and to the global energy markets. The call of restraint by India emphasizes on the security of civil infrastructure and its significance to ensure peace and stability in the Gulf, which is endowed with energy resources.

This announcement supports the stance of India regarding asset protection of energy resources and encourages dialogue to avoid the further increase of the situation in West Asia.
