India has advanced four places to reach the 130th position out of 193 countries in the United Nations Human Development Index (HDI) for 2023, as per the latest UNDP report titled ‘A Matter of Choice: People and Possibilities in the Age of Artificial Intelligence is released as the latest United Nations Development Programme report. In 2023, India reached its highest levels for the HDI rating by gaining four spots, up to 130 out of 193 countries, with better life expectancy and improved education and income features pushing its rating from 0.644 in 2022 to 0.685 in 2023.

India is rated similarly to Bangladesh as “medium human development,” while its principal result values differ. The Indian population in 2023 also lived on an average of 72 years, in contrast to 2022, when it was 67.7 years. While steady, the educational indicators showed improvement in average years of schooling, which was 6.9 compared to 6.57 earlier and expected years of schooling, which was 13 versus 12.6 earlier. India recorded Gross National Income per capita of $6,951 and $9,047 (both based on PPP 2021).

Looking at inequality-adjusted HDI values, the overall picture looks less positive. When including health, educational and income inequality factors in the evaluation of India’s HDI, the score declined to 0.475 – a 30.66% deficit in performance overall. The other indicator of disparity between men and women is the Gender Development Index, with a male score of 0.722, a female 0.631, and an overall 0.874. India stands at position 102 out of 193 countries in the Gender Inequality Index at 0.403, indicating that India faces a number of challenges pertaining to reproductive healthcare and political participation of women.
