New Delhi: India celebrates National Unity Day or Rashtriya Ekta Diwas on October 31st every year to commemorate the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, one of the founding fathers of the nation. Patel played a pivotal role in the political integration of India, convincing over 560 princely states to join the Union of India after independence.
The day is celebrated to reaffirm the country’s commitment to unity and integrity and to celebrate the diversity of its people. It is also a day to remember and honor the sacrifices made by those who have fought for the unity of India.

National Unity Day was first celebrated in 2014, following a decision by the Government of India. The day was chosen to coincide with the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who is widely regarded as the “Iron Man of India” for his role in unifying the country.
“Respectful tribute to Bharat Ratna Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Ji, the iron man who was determined to build an organized structure of the country and united India with his efforts, on his birth anniversary. His life dedicated to the service of the nation will continue to inspire countrymen for a long time. The country will always be indebted to him”, wrote Chhattigarh’s chief minister Bhupesh Baghel as he reminded citizens of National Unity Day.
