India will host the second round of the India-Arab Foreign Ministers Meeting (IAFMM) on Saturday, January 31, and this will be a landmark in the New Delhi diplomatic involvement into the Arab world after a decade long absence. It will be a co-chaired meeting led by India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and will invite foreign ministers of Arab League countries as well as the Secretary General of the League.
The event, according to a press release by the ministry of external affairs, is a manifestation of renewed determination to enhance political, strategic and economic relations between India and the Arab countries. The foreign ministers of some Arab League countries, and the Secretary General of the League, should attend, which highlights the significance both parties have put on the revival of this high level dialogue.
The inaugural IAFMM took place in Bahrain in 2016, during which the attending ministers declared five essential spheres of action including economy, energy, education, media, and culture. There are various joint projects in these industries that were suggested at that moment. The meeting that will follow is likely to be based on this foundation and aimed at extending cooperation and broadening the overall cooperation between India and Arab as per the present regional and global priorities.
The India Arab Foreign Ministers Meeting is the highest institutional process that directs the relations between India and the Arab league. This was officially formed in March 2002 when a memorandum of understanding was signed between India and the League of Arab States (LAS).
Another impetus was given in December 2008 when a Memorandum of Cooperation to form the Arab-India Cooperation Forum was signed on the visit of the then Arab League Secretary General Amre Moussa to India. In 2013, the framework was updated in order to simplify its structure. India is now the observer of the 22-member League of Arab States.
