In a first, India records over 60,000 recoveries in a single day; COVID19 count reaches 27.67 lakh

NEW DELHI: India has recorded another spike of 64,531 coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours after decline in the cases for three consecutive days. With this, India’s COVID19 count surpassed 27.67 lakh and reached 2,767,273. 

With 1,089 fatalities reported on Tuesday, the country’s death toll surged to 53,014. The third-most-affected country by total cases and fourth by death toll, India has added 431,983 cases in the past 7 days alone. India has left even the US and Brazil behind in the seven-day average of daily new coronavirus cases.

The silver lining amid this gloomy cloud is the recovery rate. On Tuesday, India reported 60,091 recovered cases in the last 24 hours.  The recoveries crossed the 20-lakh mark pushing the recovery rate to 73.64 per cent, according to the Union Health Ministry data. 

Maharashtra, New Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh are the states with the highest number of cases in the country. Andhra Tuesday became the third state after Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu to cross the three lakh mark. The state now has 3,06,261 cases.

As of Wednesday, more than 22 million people have been infected by the novel coronavirus in the world, while nearly 775,000 people have succumbed to the disease, according to a Reuters tally.

Around 14 million people have recovered from Covid-19. Since the outbreak in China’s Wuhan last December, the infection has spread to over 210 countries and territories.

The United States has the highest number of Covid-19 cases (5,481,795), followed by Brazil (3,407,354) and India. Russia ranks fourth with 930,276 cases, while South Africa is fifth with 592,144 infections.
