On Thursday, President Droupadi Murmu declared in Parliament that the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) will turn out to be one of the “biggest game-changers” of the twenty-first century.
Murmu added that a “new shape” is emerging for the global order and that the government’s efforts are making “Bharat” a more confident “Vishwa-Bandhu” in the eyes of the world. Speaking to a joint session of Parliament, she stated that because of its human-centered approach, India is now the first country to respond in times of crisis and has grown to be a powerful voice for the Global South.
The president stated that India is placing a strong focus on connectivity when outlining the foreign policy priorities of the Modi government. “My government is placing a lot of focus on connectivity, whether it be in East Asia, the Middle East, or Europe. India is credited with giving the India Middle East Europe Economic Corridor a shape,” she said. Murmu also added, “This corridor will prove to be one of the biggest game-changers of the 21st century,”
The IMEC is a groundbreaking program that aims to secure integration between Asia, the Middle East, and the West by building extensive road, railroad, and shipping networks between Saudi Arabia, India, the United States, and Europe. In September of last year, during the G20 Summit in Delhi, the IMEC project was solidified. India, Saudi Arabia, the US, the EU, the United Arab Emirates, and a few other G20 countries inked an agreement for the corridor.
The president also discussed a number of topics related to India’s top foreign policy objectives. She stated, “In this third decade of the twenty-first century, the global order is evolving. The world is seeing Bharat as a Vishwa-Bandhu, thanks to the efforts of my government.”
