On Monday, the India meteorological department (IMD) predicted more heavy to very heavy rainfall in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand and adjacent northern plains over the next three to four days.
The entire state of Jammu and Kashmir, as well as Uttarakhand, is on alert, with a red category warning, which means very heavy rainfall and a possible threat to lives and properties, issued on Monday. On the other hand, Himachal Pradesh and Punjab have been placed on an orange alert and officials have been asked to be on preparedness. IMD has also issued an orange alert to Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on Tuesday also.
The weather agency also reported that rainfall in the Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha and Jharkhand will be high probability between July 23 and 27. Moreover, heavy to very heavy precipitation is predicted all over a number of southern and central states such as Kerala, Karnataka, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, the Konkan, Goa, central Maharashtra, Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh in the next five to seven days.
The IMD clarified that the western termination of the monsoon trough is now stationed above its normal place in the direction of the north, whereas, the eastern end of the trough is at about its usual place in mean sea level. Upper air cyclonic circulation maintains itself over West Rajasthan and adjacent Pakistan at lower levels of the troposphere and tilts southwards with elevation. Upper air cyclonic circulation at lower and middle troposphere level also exists over south of Odisha and its surrounding areas with a upsloping towards southeast direction.
In addition, east-west trough is spreading over middle troposphere in northern central Karnataka to south coastal Andhra Pradesh. Another cyclonic circulation of upperair lies in the lower levels of the troposphere over the northeast Assam and its surroundings.
The IMD said there is also a probability of a new low-pressure area to develop in the north Bay of Bengal on July 24 that could ramp up rainfall activity in the northeast and eastern parts of India in the coming days.
