New Delhi: India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued comprehensive warnings of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, accompanied by lightning, thunderstorms, and gusty winds, across various parts of India for the next two to three days. This widespread alert underscores the significant impact of prevailing weather systems, including a low-pressure area over the Northwest Bay of Bengal, which is expected to intensify into a depression.

In a recent update, IMD wrote on X, “Yesterday’s WML concentrated into a depression at 0530 hours IST of today the 29th May 2025 over northwest Bay of Bengal off West Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh coasts about 100 km south southeast of Sagar Island. To move nearly northwards, intensify further into a deep depression and cross West Bengal and Bangladesh coasts between Sagar Island and Khepupara, Bangladesh by an afternoon of today”.

In response to the severe weather forecast, precautionary measures are already being implemented. In Mizoram, all schools have been closed on Thursday as a direct result of the IMD’s warnings and advisories from the state disaster management and rehabilitation department. This proactive step aims to ensure the safety of students and prevent any potential mishaps arising from the inclement weather.

Similarly, in Goa, the adverse weather conditions have led to the cancellation of a public meeting scheduled for Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge. The state has been experiencing torrential rains for the past four days, coinciding with the early onset of the southwest monsoon, which arrived in parts of Odisha almost 13 days ahead of its normal schedule. INC Goa announced the meet for Goa Statehood Day scheduled for May 30, 2025.

Beyond Mizoram and Goa, other states are also preparing for the impact. Karnataka’s Kodagu district has declared a two-day holiday for educational institutions, while Assam is also bracing for extremely heavy rainfall. The IMD’s warnings highlight the need for continued vigilance and adherence to safety guidelines as the monsoon advances across the country.
