Mumbai: Mumbaikars on Wednesday morning faced traffic snarls as the rainy season finally set in. With IMD issuing an orange alert across the city and its neighbouring regions, 9 NDRF teams have been deployed. The IMD in the same notice has issued a red alert predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall in Raigarh and Ratnagiri.
With Tuesday’s downpour, Mumbai has recorded 594 mm of average July rainfall which is almost 69.41 per cent in just the first five days of the month. Waterlogged in the city disrupted the traffic, halting bus and train services. The 36-hour rainfall that ended on Tuesday afternoon replenished lakes in the city.
Parts of Mumbai including Sion, Mulund, Chembur, Andheri East, Patanwadi in Malad East and Kandivali witnessed flooding after Tuesday’s downpour. People on the streets struggled their way through knee-deep water in the low-lying areas were affected the most.
The newly elected CM of Maharashtra held his first cabinet meeting on Tuesday taking stock of the rains. NDRF teams were instructed to relocate people along river banks and flood lines to safer places.
The coastal Konkan, Kolhapur, Palghar, Thane and Mumbai in Maharastra are being monitored closely.
