Many parts of India are under weather alerts issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) due to thunderstorm warnings, rainfall and severe weather approaching. Rain is expected to be light and moderate in most of South Bengal through the night on Thursday, led by Salt Lake, which recorded the highest rainfall in 24 hours, at 81.3 mm. There were also heavy rains elsewhere in the city; for example, Dum Dum received 57 mm, and Alipore recorded 38 mm. IMD pointed out that the short but heavy rains brought a decline in minimum temperatures across the metropolitan area.

The districts of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar and Alipurduar in Bengal which lie beyond the Himalayas, are predicted to face heavy rainfall until Friday morning. Cooch Behar had the highest rainfall with 139 mm and Alipurduar came close behind with 110.2 mm.

Severe thunderstorms with hail are expected by the IMD to hit Lucknow, Hardoi, Raebareli, Unnao and Ayodhya over the next few hours in eastern Uttar Pradesh. They are expected to cause severe weather and they can upset ordinary activities.

Delhi, the national capital, has issued a yellow alert because there may be severe weather conditions soon. People have been advised by the IMD that strong thunderstorms, lightning bursts and gusts of wind up to 40–50 km/h are approaching. Delhi’s humidity is 71% at 8:30 am, and the highest temperature is set to remain about 34°C. The AQI as of 9 am Wednesday is 181, which means the air quality is still moderate.
