New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday presented a strong roadmap for future weather services on its 151st foundation day. Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh announced on the occasion that the government will set up Centres of Excellence and new regional meteorological centres across the country to enhance the reach and impact of the IMD. Dr Singh said that a total of 200 automatic weather stations will be installed in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Pune by 2026. Each city will have 50 stations, which will improve the accuracy of weather data and provide timely information.
Speaking at an event held at Mausam Bhawan, Lodhi Road, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh stated that the government is prioritizing data-driven, city-specific, and hyper-local weather forecasting. He explained that forecast accuracy has increased by 40-50 percent over the past years, while cyclone track prediction has improved by 35-40 percent. The error rate in monthly and seasonal forecasts has also decreased from 7.5% to 2.5%. Dr. Jitendra Singh stated that a dense network of automated weather stations will provide granular and high-resolution spatial data. This will enable more accurate predictions of events such as sudden heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, extreme heat, and rapid pressure changes.
Emphasis on data-driven forecasting
During this, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh emphasized that data-based weather forecasting not only helps in disaster risk reduction but is also important for informed decision making in sectors like agriculture, aviation, urban planning and public safety.
Dr. Singh said that the launch of Mission Mausam is a clear signal of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s long-term commitment to advanced meteorological and climate services. He explained that the mission will enable accurate prediction of weather events through high-resolution data and automated weather stations, strengthening both policymaking and disaster management.
