New Delhi: The Indian Medical Association (IMA) announced a nationwide protest today against the numerous abusive incidents the front line workers confronted.

All nurses, doctors and healthcare staff on COVID-19 duty will participate in the agitation. As per a statement issued by IMA President Dr JA Jayalal over 3.5 lakh, doctors will participate in the nationwide protest demanding a central law of protection. The protest comes after several incidents of abuse were reported across the country since the outbreak. It is also reported that the Association of Physicians of India (API) and Junior Doctor Network (JDN) will also take part in the protest.

“We are deeply hurt to see increasing physical violence on doctors and healthcare professionals. It’s occurring day in and day out. The IMA is pressing for a central act against the violence,” the IMA said in a statement.

Listing plans for Friday’s protest, the IMA said memorandums will be submitted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, senior ministers including home minister Amit Shah. All 1700 branches of IMA would submit a memorandum to local authorities.

In Bihar and central Kerala, doctors will close their clinics in the morning to press for the demand of a central law against violence against doctors. In the evening, public interaction has been arranged to form a coordination team in each branch of IMA to stop such violence from taking place.
