In a sharp criticism, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has accused the former Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi, of treating the political aftermath resulting from India’s victory in the 1971 war that led to the establishment of Bangladesh in a ‘blundering’ way. Condemning the political leaders of that time for ignoring a critical time, Sarma on the social media platform X posted the following with regards to the emergence of Bangladesh, as a “lost historic opportunity”.

His remarks have the timing when after U.S. President Donald Trump had announced a “full and immediate” ceasefire between India and Pakistan, after U.S. mediation – opposition leaders have set their sights on Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Following this, political leaders have highlighted similarities between Modi’s attitude and Indira Gandhi’s behavior in the 1971 conflict.

His post was titled “The Myth of Bangladesh’s Creation” by Sarma: “A Strategic Triumph / A Diplomatic Folly,” which asserts a military triumph for the Hindus in 1971, but political leadership l9 it away diplomatically. The victory in 1971 on the Indian military stage was, by no means, a turning point in history. It divided Pakistan into two regions and formed Bangladesh. When our forces won the battle easily, the country’s political leadership failed to capitalize on the opportunity to secure lasting great strategic gains,” he noted.

The founding of Bangladesh tends to be described as a diplomatic triumph, which Sarma argued had no real strategic value. Although India’s military triumph in 1971 was a great accomplishment, it was without sound political planning. The chance to create a new regional topography faltered as it amounted to nothing but an Indian gesture of kindness alone, he said. Himanta Sarma added that layering the words Indira Gandhi with the situation, how she would or should have handled it if she were alive, would be labeled as less than a sustained, strategic gain after the military victory.
