Karnataka: Amidst scoring protests over the implementation of uniform dress code in educational institutions across Karnataka, Muslim students of Government PU College in the Kundapura area of the Udupi district on Monday were allowed to enter the campus. However, they were made to sit in another classroom.
Earlier today police officials in Kundanpur, Udipi district arrested two people for allegedly carrying lethal weapons amidst protests being staged by college students.
Reportedly, a group of five have been seen loitering in the vicinity of colleges that witnessed protests. According to police, these were miscreants intending to create tension and had no relation with the students agitating. So far, it’s obscured if they have any political affiliations, investigations around it are underway.
One accused, Majid, 32 amongst two is a history-sheeter and has been charged with attempted homicide, rioting with a deadly weapon, and criminal conspiracy. The other accused is identified as Rajab 41. Cases against both were filed at the police station in Gangolli village near Kundapur town.
Meanwhile, on Sunday, Karnataka Education Minister BC Nagesh said students who are unwilling to adhere to the uniform dress code are at liberty to explore other options. “Just as rules are followed in the military, the same is to be done here (in educational institutions) as well. Options are open for those who are not willing to follow it, which they can make use of,” Nagesh told. He appealed to the students not to become ‘tools’ in the hands of political parties.
The hijab conflict has been shadowing the state since December last year after colleges denied entry to girl students wearing Hijab in the classroom.
