On Wednesday, after President Droupadi Murmu’s helicopter landed at Rajiv Gandhi Stadium in Kerala’s Pathanamthitta following her visit to Sabarimala, part of a newly constructed concrete helipad gave way. Officials said the stadium was selected as a landing site at the last moment, and the helipad was constructed late on Tuesday, meaning the concrete had not fully set to support the helicopter’s weight.

According to a senior police officer, the helicopter’s wheels sank into the partially cured surface, causing a depression, which partially collapsed the landing site. Originally the helicopter was going to land at Nilackal near Pamba, adjusted to Pramadam due to weather conditions. No one was injured in the incident and the President descended to the ground without difficulty.

Officials stated the helicopter landing incident occurred not due to structural negligence, but due the urgency in preparing the helipad. After the incident, the administration is investigating the methods of construction and safety considerations around temporary helipads for VIPs to avoid similar incidents.
