New Delhi: The deluge in North India over the past two days has resulted in a confluence of two systems-the monsoon winds and eastern disturbances. The interaction of the two systems also led to the 2013 Uttrakhand floods. In lieu of the heavy rainfall today, all schools in Himachal Pradesh, New Delhi, and Haryana are closed for all classes today.
Heavy rains have caused devastating landslides and flash floods in the hilly states including Himachal Pradesh. Three people lost their lives when a landslide hit a house in Madholi village in the Shimla district. On Sunday, landslides and flash floods claimed 17 lives in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, while five were reported dead in Jammu and Kashmir.
Distressing videos continued to emerge as shops are being swept away in Manali and Manikaran’s iconic bridge swept away in Beas. Over 700 roads have been closed in HP, more than 100 blocked in Uttarakhand. 200 marooned in Chandratal lake in Lahaul and Spiti. The Panchvaktra temple is partially submerged by a swollen Beas river in Mandi.
In just 36 hours, 385.5mm of rainfall has been reported in Chandigarh. In Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda, a landslide struck a passenger bus, killing two. An earthquake too jolted the area today morning at a magnitude of 4.6. This has been the 12th earthquake in the area.
