Odisha and West Bengal have been experiencing heavy rainfall due to a deep depression that has developed over the Bay of Bengal, which has led the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue numerous warnings to the two states. With the system approaching the coast, the authorities have advised the residents to be cautious and take the required precautions.

In Odisha, the IMD has predicted that the deep depression will tend to hit the land near Gopalpur in Ganjam district during the evening of Thursday. In reaction to this, the weather department has declared a red warning of very heavy rainfall in seven districts, an orange warning of 16 districts, and a yellow warning of the remaining seven districts. There has already been a lot of rainfall in coastal and southern areas since Wednesday, and waterlogging has been reported in many areas. The state government has deployed people and equipment to the affected areas so as to control the situation and provide relieves in time. The rough sea conditions brought about by the depression have also led to fishermen being warned not to go into the sea along and off the coast of Odisha until October 3.

In the meantime, West Bengal will see heavy rains in at least a few districts up to October 6. The IMD predicts that South 24 Parganas, Purba and Paschim Medinipur, and Jhargram might get a very heavy rainfall of 7 to 20 cm in far-flung locations and that Kolkata and Howrah might get a very heavy downpour of 7 to 11 cm up to early morning on Friday. Even by Thursday, showers have already started in some areas of the state.

The severe depression is heading to the coastline at 18 kmph. By 11:30 AM, the system was centred around 90 km south-southeast of Gopalpur, 140 km east-northeast of Kalingapatnam, 140 km south-southwest of Puri, 230 km east-northeast of Visakhapatnam, and 240 km southwest of Paradip.
