Mirzapur/Sonbhadra: A heatwave in the area caused 13 poll workers deployed in Uttar Pradesh died from a high temperature and high blood pressure. In a Mirzapur hospital, 23 more people were admitted. Three more poll workers had died, according to a top Sonbhadra district official, and eight more had become ill with possible heatstroke.
The principal of Maa Vindhyavasini Autonomous State Medical College in Mirzapur, Dr. Raj Bahadur Kamal, informed the media that the deaths included seven home guard jawans, three sanitation workers, one clerk working in the Chief Medical Officer’s office, one chakbandi adhikaari (consolidation officer), and one peon from the home guard team. They were on poll duty.
Medical college principal Kamal stated, “Four of the 13 casualties were reported dead. Two of the four were jawans serving as homeguards. Five of the seven homeguard jawans who died did so within twenty to twenty-five minutes of being taken to the hospital.The homeguard jawans who passed away were between the ages of 50 and 55. According to him, there are currently 23 patients admitted to the hospital. He stated that one of these is a jawan from the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC), one is from the fire department, and one is from the civil police.
“All of them came with high-grade temperatures. Almost all of them had high blood pressure and high sugar levels. Most homeguard Jawans had co-morbid conditions. The cause of deaths will be known in the post-mortem report,” Dr. Raj Bahadur Kamal added. In a video message on X, Superintendent of Police (Mirzapur) Abhinandan stated, “Mirzapur district will host Lok Sabha elections on June 1st.” Today, polling party dispatches have been made. Tragically, six house guards passed away during this time. Two of them are from Gonda district. One each from the districts of Prayagraj, Basti, Kaushambi, and Mirzapur.” He claimed that their families had been informed and that the remains had been sent for a post-mortem.
B. K. Singh, the Home Guards Commandant of Mirzapur, was observed asking the admitted jawans how they were doing and offering them consolation. “Today, Polytechnic was the starting point for the polling party movement. After carrying out their assigned tasks during the six rounds of the Lok Sabha elections, our jawans have arrived. They were tired. The heat is so intense that even if they drink water and move a few steps, their lips will become dry,” he told the media.
“The Jawans were unable to tolerate the heat. And within one to one-and-a-half hours, this entire incident occurred. And by then, six or seven of our jawans were dead,” Singh continued.
Akhilesh Yadav, the leader of the Samajwadi Party, responded to the deaths of poll workers in Mirzapur by requesting that the government end its silence and offer assistance to the families that have been “ruined due to mismanagement.” Additionally, he urged the government to give all other workers the best care possible and promptly declare a compensation of ₹ 5 crore for each of the families of the victims. who have become ill from the heatstroke.
