New Delhi: The Indian Meteorological Department reported that the country is experiencing more heat waves than ever before. The reports said that in the last five decades, there have been only two years where the country had more than 200 cumulative days of heat waves.
Meanwhile, IMD tweeted about the thunderstorm surrounding entire Delhi and regions of UP, Haryana.
In the year 2010, the country had 256 heat wave days, and in the year 203, the heat wave days were 203. Heatwaves are becoming an increasingly common occurrence across many states in India. According to data from the Indian Meteorological Department, the average number of heatwave days per decade has risen by over 35% in the 2010s compared to the previous high in the 1970s.
In fact, the first three years of this decade have already seen an average of 93 heatwave days per year, making it the third highest since the 1970s.
The IMD’s analysis also reveals that most states in the north-western, central, eastern and coastal regions of India have experienced a significant increase in annual average heatwave days in the past decade compared to previous decades. This trend is cause for concern and highlights the urgent need for effective measures to mitigate the impact of rising temperatures on human health and the environment.
