New Delhi: The Government of India on Wednesday approved Biological E’s Corbevax booster shot for Covaxin and Covishield beneficiaries above 18 years. “Restricted Use in Emergency Situation’ officials added was approved after recommendations by the Covid-19 Working Group of the National Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (NTAGI).

This is for the first time a heterologous booster has been approved for administration. However, the recommendation is sought only for individuals above 18 who have been administered Covishield or CoVaxin.

“Corbevax will be considered as a precaution dose after completion of six months or 26 weeks from the date of administration of the second dose of either Covaxin or Covishield vaccines for those aged above 18 years enabling use of Corbevax as a heterologous COVID-19 vaccine for precaution dose administration in this age group,” the sources said.

The source further informes that all necessary changes in regards to Corbevax vaccine are being made on the Co-WIN portal.

Corbevax- India’s first indigenously developed RBD protein subunit vaccine prepared by Biological E is currently being administered in children between 12 to 14 years. It was on June 4th the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) had approved as a precaution dose for those aged 18 and above.
