Gulmarg, a popular skiing resort in Kashmir valley, received the first snowfall of the season on Saturday, drastically changing the region’s weather conditions.

Snow started falling early in the morning and continued off and on the rest of the day, accumulating about one inch of thick snow on the world-famous meadow of Gulmarg. The launch of early winter was seen when the place turned into a picture-perfect snowy wonderland with white snow lavishing on the slopes of the popular tourist attraction.

Besides Gulmarg, other higher reaches of Kashmir valley, including Gurez in Bandipora district, Machil in Kupwara, and the Mughal Road in Shopian, received fresh snowfall. They are high-altitude regions that normally provide scenic views, and early snows prevail in the area. These snowfalls in these areas will open up grounds for improving conditions for winter sports personalities and add aesthetics to the valley’s beauty.

At the same time, the plains, particularly Srinagar, received a spell of heavy rain on the same day. The heavy rain continued through much of the night, and, while it began to clear by morning, it was wet for many people, as the meteorological department predicted. The snow that falls in higher places such as Gulmarg and other high elevated areas is normal during this period, but the rain that is received in Srinagar and the plains after the hills is normal transitional weather between Autumn and winter.

The weather department also came up with a forecast asserting that the region will expect generally dry November 17 to 23. But on 24 November, there may be a possibility of light rain or light snow at a few places in the higher reaches, which indicates a change in the trend in the coming weeks.
