A drug smuggling ring was nabbed by the Gujarat police, who also found hybrid ganja and other suspected drugs worth about Rs. 3.50 crore hidden in baby toys, diapers, books, chocolates, jackets, speakers, and vitamin candies, officials said on Saturday.
According to officials, a first information report (FIR) has been filed under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and they are working to capture five suspects who are located in Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, and New Delhi. Police said that the contraband was discovered in packages that were sent from the US, the UK, and Canada.
Officials claim that the narcotics were ordered via the dark web and the social media app Telegram. The money for the drugs was allegedly transferred in cryptocurrency that was placed in foreign bank accounts, and the drugs were concealed in couriers that came from these nations. According to a statement from the Ahmedabad Crime Branch, 58 suspicious parcels carrying drugs such as hybrid ganja and kratom were separated on Friday as a result of a joint operation between the Customs Department and the Ahmedabad Crime Branch.
According to authorities, sniffer dogs were used to identify the suspicious packages. Among the materials confiscated are 60 bottles of liquid kratom extract priced at Rs. 72,000 and 11.6 kg of hybrid ganja, which is estimated to be worth Rs. 3.48 crore on foreign markets.
The home minister of Gujarat, Harsh Singhvi, commended the police force. As he wrote to X, “The Gujarat Police is unwavering in its resolve to bring down drug networks throughout the region and provide a safe environment for all citizens. Gratifying committed law enforcement officers whose hard work and dedication have made this operation a success.”
In order to modify the delivery address of the packages after they were shipped, peddlers had to get in touch with delivery agents. According to sources, the Ahmedabad Crime Branch also notified the Surat police, which led to the seizure of drugs worth Rs. 28 lakh in a similar operation.
