Pune: The total number of Guillain-Barre Syndrome cases increased to 73, comprising 47 and 26 women. Of these, 14 are on ventilator support,” said an official.

Pune has reported six new suspected cases of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), a rare neurological disorder, officials said. The total number of cases in the region now stands at 73.

What is Guillain-Barre Syndrome

The GBS is triggered by the pathogenic bacteria Campylobacter jejuni, experts told. The affected person’s immune system attacks the nerves. The recent detection of the pathogen in stool samples from multiple hospitals adds to evidence linking this bacteria to the outbreak.

Concerns spread after recent cases included an infant and a todlder. Health experts and doctors suspect the cluster formed on January 9, with the first patient to be admitted to the hospital.

Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) is a rare autoimmune disorder where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the peripheral nervous system. This network of nerves connects the brain and spinal cord to the rest of the body, controlling muscle movement and sensory perception.

The exact cause of GBS is unknown, but it often follows a bacterial or viral infection, such as a respiratory or gastrointestinal illness. Symptoms can develop rapidly, often starting with tingling or weakness in the legs and feet. This can progress to the arms and upper body, leading to muscle weakness and even paralysis in severe cases.

GBS can be life-threatening if it affects the muscles that control breathing. While there’s no cure, treatments like plasma exchange and immunoglobulin therapy can help reduce symptom severity and speed recovery. Most individuals with GBS recover, though some may experience lasting effects.
