The Greater Noida Police says they will only base their investigation into the death of Nikki Bhati, who died due to severe burn injuries at her in-laws’ residence in Sirsa village, on circumstantial evidence directly connected to the case. The 26-year-old woman died on August 21, and her untimely death has led authorities to closely investigate the circumstances of the incident.
According to sources in the police, Nikki’s husband, Vipin Bhati, her father-in-law, mother-in-law and brother-in-law, Rohit, have all been arrested after a complaint was lodged by her sister, Kanchan. The police are keeping an open diary, and only relevant information and evidence will be entered into the investigation. Adding to this, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police, Greater Noida, Sudheer Kumar said, “We are investigating the cause of her death. Whatever is pertinent to the probe will be recorded.”
The police further revealed that the leading accused, Vipin Bhati, 30, had already been involved in a case in 2024 for allegedly assaulting another woman. The case was made bailable, and a charge sheet was framed in the court.
Also, other members of the family have come forward to report abuse. Nikki’s sister-in-law Meenakshi, who is married to Rohit since 2016, alleged that she was subjected to dowry-related harassment, assaults and restrictions on communication, including being forbidden to keep a phone. Avinash Kumar told The Indian Express that a complaint lodged by her in 2020 was resolved by a local panchayat.
The investigators also showed that in April, a panchayat meeting was held to settle disputes between Nikki and Vipin. During this meeting, Nikki and her sister Kanchan were given an undertaking not to post content on social media, in return for the Bhati family’s promises that Vipin would not harass Nikki.
Assistant Commissioner of Police, Arvind Kumar, underlined that the investigation is in progress and did not give out any more information.
