In a step of significant change with a view of enhancing the convenience of the passengers, the Ministry of Civil Aviation has asked the airlines in India to offer at least 60 percent of seats on each flight without any extra charge. The move will come as a big relief to air travellers who usually incur an additional cost when booking or checking in on picking their seats.

Based on the official instruction, the airlines are required to make most seats accessible free of charge so that it encourages equal access and price adequacy in the tickets. So far, there were few number of free seats and the passenger was required to pay a fee to choose their preferred sitting section.

Other regulations have also been developed by the government to standardise the practices of the airline and improve the general experience of travelling. Among the most important guidelines is the fact that the passengers who make the same bookings (the same PNR) should be seated close to each other. The airlines have been cautioned to focus on seating such passengers at the adjacent seating especially when it comes to families and groups of people travelling together.

These are initiatives that are included in a larger initiative to introduce consistency, minimize incurred charges and enhance consumer satisfaction within the aviation industry. The authorities feel that the new rules will also render air travel more accessible and transparent, particularly to low cost hitched travellers.

These changes are supposed to be enforced immediately by airlines and the regulators are to ensure that the airlines adhere to the changes to have passengers enjoying the new norms.
