The country’s largest airline, IndiGo, has been under intense criticism for the past three days. Massive cancellations, hours-long delays, and chaos at airports across the country have shaken the aviation system. The government is now considering this entire crisis as extremely serious, and the anger of already disgruntled passengers is growing. According to government sources, the central government is seriously considering recommending the removal of IndiGo CEO Peter Elbers. Furthermore, the airline is preparing to face a hefty penalty, which could be considered the largest action taken in the industry so far.

According to sources, the government is planning to directly cut the airline’s operations. Flight allotments on several IndiGo routes will be reduced. The airline will only be allowed to operate flights on which it can provide a full crew. Meanwhile, there are allegations that IndiGo has been operating an overcrowded schedule for the past several months. The government believes that overstressed operations led to this major operational meltdown, causing inconvenience to thousands of passengers.

The situation has deteriorated so much that the airline’s top officials have been summoned to the Ministry of Civil Aviation again today. Another urgent meeting will be held at 6 p.m., where the ministry wants to know what steps the airline has taken so far to bring the situation under control. Officials have clearly indicated that if IndiGo doesn’t show immediate improvement, further action will be more stringent.

Sources say the Civil Aviation Ministry is preparing to separately brief the Prime Minister’s Office on the entire crisis. Clearly, the central government is not taking the matter lightly this time. Passenger complaints are steadily increasing, and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is under intense pressure to take immediate action. Consequently, it is believed that even more stringent measures against the airline could be imminent.
