On Wednesday, the Union Environment Ministry reported that it has met the challenge of planting 800 million saplings under the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign by September. Starting from World Environment Day in June, the tree plantation campaign urges people of the country to plant trees for their mothers as a sign of respect, and love as well as a token of the commitment towards the earth’s health. The campaign is also closely associated with the ex—it might be used by the following measures to stop land degradation and support the rehabilitation of degraded land.

The ministry also appreciated the collaboration efforts that involved government and civil institutions and organizations at the village level, as well as locals and different stakeholders, to make the campaign a success. This can be made possible by the hardness and combined efforts by everyone in the_fifo the ministry stated.

One of the greatest achievements under the campaign was done by the ministry and the Territorial Army on Sunday when over 500000 saplings were planted in one hour across seven points in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan in record time. District authorities, NHPC, NGOs, local communities, schools, Territorial Army, 128 Bn Eco-Task Force, BSF, and Home Guard all supported this accomplishment. Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav posted about it on X, saying, ‘5,19,130 trees in one hour’. This has been done under the people’s participation campaign #ekpedmakenaam which has been certified by the World Book of Records.

However, environmentalists have warned that such large-scale plantation exercises would only be successful if undertaken in consultation with the ecological factors of the region. Local populations must be involved in management since they understand the terrain of the country.
