G20 Summit: As world leaders gather for the G20 Summit in Johannesburg, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met multiple leaders, reaffirming shared commitment to global progress and prosperity. His remark at the G20 session on a resilient world, “India building a future that is human-centric, inclusive”, is evidence of what India holds.

The summit took place at a time when the world is seeking solutions to major issues, including the global economic crisis, the climate change crisis, and inequality.  South African President Cyril Ramaphosa successfully led G20 members to finalise and adopt a declaration despite a US boycott. India’s role has been pivotal in the Summit and here are the key points that prove it;

  • India, represented by PM Modi, pitched the global leaders to adopt the six new G20-led initiatives that called for urgent and coordinated action to overcome the challenge of drug trafficking.
  • India also proposed the creation of the G20 Global Healthcare Response Team with trained medical professionals from member countries.
  • India proposed the establishment of a Global Traditional Knowledge Repository and with this, PM Modi announced the G20 Open Satellite Data Partnership.

Prime Minister Modi will also hold several important bilateral meetings. The most important meeting is scheduled with Japan’s new Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, with whom he will hold talks separately from the summit. Additionally, during his visit from November 21 to 23, the Prime Minister will also participate in the sixth IBSA (India, Brazil, and South Africa) Summit. In a statement issued before leaving India, Prime Minister Modi noted that this summit is special because, for the first time, the G20 is being held on African soil. He also recalled that during India’s presidency of the African Union in 2023, the African Union was admitted to the G20, which was considered a major step for developing countries.
