Officials stated on Sunday that a bomb blast in the Kangpokpi district of Manipur killed Charubala Haokip, the wife of a former MLA. According to them, the bombing occurred on Saturday night at the house adjacent to that of former Saikul MLA Yamthong Haokip.

The second wife of Haokip, Sapam Charubala, was injured in the explosion and was brought to a hospital in Saikul, where she eventually passed away, officials said. Even though Haokip was at residence when the explosion occurred, he was uninjured.

The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon at around 3 p.m., according to a police officer from the Kangpokpi district, but it was reported early on Saturday morning. He claimed that among the trash at the house was an IED manufactured nearby. “When the deceased burned the waste material, it exploded. Everybody else is okay. There are no other fatalities or injuries,” he said.

On Sunday morning, no one had been taken into custody. According to the police officer, it was suspected that a family dispute had led to the attack.

Charubala Haokip, 59, was a Meitei resident of Ekou Mulam in the Kangpokpi district, which was dominated by Kuki and Zomi. Yamthong Haokip, 64, was elected to the Saikul seat twice: in 2012 and again in 2017 while running for Congress. Ahead of the 2022 Assembly elections, he joined the BJP.
