Former chief minister and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leader Champai Soren joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Ranchi on Friday. He joined the party with Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, and Jharkhand BJP President Babulal Maran.
Soren along with a large number of his supporters joined the BJP in the presence of Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma at a ceremony in Ranchi.
“I was embarrassed, and that’s why I had decided to retire (from politics). However, because of love and support of people of Jharkhand, I decided to not to retire from politics. I have seen the struggle during the ‘Jharkhand andolan’,” Soren said after joining the BJP.
“I thought that I will launch a new party or join another party, but I will never stay in that organization where I was embarrassed. Later, I decided to join a party (BJP) to continue serving the people of Jharkhand,” he added.
Champai Soren became the chief minister of Jharkhand on February 2, shortly after Hemant Soren resigned as the CM following his arrest by the ED in a money laundering case. Champai quit the post and Hemant took oath as the CM again in July, after he was released on bail.
