Udhampur: At least 40 people including men, women, and children were injured today after a footbridge collapsed during a Bisakhi fair in Udhampur district of Jammu. The recently constructed bridge was over a water stream in Chenani’s Bain village. As it came crashing down due to overload when several people stood on it.
Divisional Commissioner (Jammu) Ramesh Kumar also said that the bridge collapsed due to overloading as a large number of people had gathered on it.
Residents of the village had reportedly contributed money for the construction of this footbridge and locals had assisted security forces and police personnel after the incident to rescue people who had fallen in the stream. The injured have been rushed to the nearby hospital.
