Dispur– The flood situation in Assam worsened on Thursday as incessant rains led to rising water levels across the state, submerging more areas. According to the latest report from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the floods have affected over 119,800 individuals in various districts, including Dhemaji, Dhubri, Kokrajhar, Baksa, Barpeta, Darrang, Lakhimpur, Nalbari, Sonitpur, and Udalguri.
Nalbari has been severely impacted, with nearly 45,000 people struggling amidst floodwaters, followed by Baksa (26,500) and Lakhimpur (25,000), as reported by the ASDMA. The damages incurred from heavy flooding have left at least twenty districts and sub-divisions in disarray. Over one hundred thousand animals suffered, while an excess of ten thousand hectares worth of crops were destroyed in the aftermath.
The state administration has established 14 relief camps in the flood-affected districts to address the situation, providing shelter to over 2,000 people. Additionally, 17 relief distribution centres have been set up to provide essential supplies and assistance. The SDRF remains fervent in successfully conducting rescue operations by evacuating 1,280 people.
The India Meteorological Department’s regional office in Guwahati anticipates significant rain showers over Assam shortly, which suggests that flood conditions could endure longer than expected. In light of such daunting circumstances, authorities and relief organizations maintain constant monitoring as they endeavour to provide relief services for affected communities’ well-being and security.
