Mandi: Triggered by a cloud burst, flash floods in Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi have wreaked havoc. According to official sources, more than 20 vehicles have been buried, and 3 people have been killed as several houses lay inundated. The fury of rain was so intense that water from the Sukati drain was flowing through the city, gushing with a huge amount of debris.

The rescue operations are not easy in this hilly state. A tragic accident occurred near the Kumarsain area of Shimla during road-clearing work, in which a JCB machine fell into a ravine due to rocks falling from the hillside. In this accident, the JCB operator, Mr. Dinesh Kumar, a resident of Gurukotha in the Balh subdivision of Mandi district, tragically passed away, informed CM Sukhvinder SIngh through a tweet.

The Local Met office had issued an orange alert of heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated areas of Kangra, Mandi, and Kullu districts on Tuesday (July 29).

It also issued a yellow warning of heavy rains at isolated places in Chamba, Shimla and Sirmaur districts on Tuesday, and Una, Kangra, Mandi and Kullu districts on Wednesday (July 30, 2025). The heaviest rainfall in the state was recorded in Una, the district in the lower hills bordering Punjab, at a massive 260.8 mm. Water accumulated on the roads and in markets. Educational institutions have been closed until further notice in Una.

More than 400 roads were closed in Himachal Pradesh as heavy rains lashed various parts of the state again since Friday evening. In Mandi district, through which key roads such as the highway to Kullu-Manali pass, 174 roads were closed. More than 100 roads are closed in Chamba, according to the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC).

Earlier on August 1, it was reported that a sudden flash flood the Kullu district caused a partial breach of the cofferdam at the Malana-I Hydroelectric Project, washing away multiple vehicles and heavy machinery in its path. The incident has raised fresh concerns about infrastructure vulnerability in the face of intense monsoon rains.
