Delhi- Several significant roads in Delhi, the capital city of India, are currently submerged under water due to the Yamuna River overflowing its banks. This has resulted in extensive flooding throughout the area since last Wednesday. Authorities have undertaken evacuation efforts in low-lying areas and have redirected traffic away from affected roads.
Abnormally heavy rainfall has been witnessed in Northern India during the monsoon season, which commenced in June. The loss of human lives due to the heavy rains stands at 88 in Himachal Pradesh alone. The states of Punjab and Haryana are also grappling with severe floods.
On Thursday, the Yamuna River in Delhi climbed to 208.46 meters, exceeding the previous day’s level of 207.49 meters. Many low-lying regions and highways have been drowned as a result. Videos circulating on social media show vehicles submerged in the floodwaters, including cars and buses. The flooding affected the residence of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and a key road leading to Connaught Place, a prominent business center.
In response to the situation, Chief Minister Kejriwal announced the closure of schools, colleges, and universities in the capital until Sunday. He urged government employees, except those providing essential services, to work from home. Water rationing has been implemented due to the closure of three water treatment plants, leading to possible water shortages for a few days. Apart from those involved in essential services, heavy vehicles have been prohibited from entering Delhi.
Relief efforts are underway, with over 16,000 people being relocated to relief tents set up under flyovers by the Delhi government. Disaster assistance teams have been sent to impacted regions, and rescue efforts are underway. Efforts are also being made to regulate the water released from the Hathnikund Barrage in Haryana, contributing to the Yamuna River’s swelling. Authorities expect the water flow from the barrage to subside gradually, bringing some relief to the flood-affected areas.
