22 passengers of a civic transport service bus traveling on Thursday morning in Navi Mumbai had a lucky escape following an event that nearly saw them burnt to cinder when the bus they were in caught fire. The bus, operated by Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport (NMMT), caught fire around 10:30 a.m. at Runwal Chowk, which is in the Manpada region on the Kalyan-Shilphata Road.
The manager praised the swift response of the driver as the major reason that contributed to avoiding injuries. Seeing the flames, the driver pulled over the bus and, with the help of loud warnings for all the passengers, evacuated everybody. He also could leap into safety before the fire could continue spreading to the other area. Luckily, all 22 people on board were safely evacuated without anybody getting injured, and that was confirmed by the police officers.
It closed the road for a few minutes but disrupted traffic on either side as the residents watched the fire burning at the station. The local police promptly realized the situation was an emergency; they rearranged the traffic to avoid any passersby incidents. Police personnel, in coordination with a water tanker, managed to put off the fire within half an hour before the fire could spread further.
After that, an operation was initiated to wipe out the impression of the fire after extinguishing the fire. An example of a calamity is a burned-out bus, which needed a crane to lift it off the road so that the traffic could get back to normal. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Pankaj Shirsat said, “There were no injuries reported; the passengers had been rescued by the traffic police patrolling the area, and the fire was put out without any complications.”
Measures were also made for automotive vehicles that transport inflammable products to avoid accidents during an emergency. On the other hand, the stranded passengers proceeded with their trips using private cars and auto rickshaws while the police scrambled to control the situation.
