Amid tight security, Shiromani Akali Dal leader Sukhbir Singh Badal performed the role of “sewadar” outside a gurdwara in Punjab’s Fatehgarh Sahib on Saturday. This is the fifth day of Mr. Badal’s penance for “mistakes” made by the SAD and its government in Punjab from 2007 to 2017.
Other SAD leaders, who were facing religious punishment pronounced by the Akal Takht, the supreme body of Sikhs, on December 2, were also present at the Gurudwara.
Meanwhile, Mr. Badal, who was in a wheelchair because of a broken leg, washed dishes in the community kitchen and listened to ‘kirtan.’ Former Deputy Chief Minister reached the Gurudwara surrounded by security personnel. Dressed in a blue ‘Sevadaar’ uniform, he sat at the entrance of the Gurudwara with a spear in one hand for an hour from 9 am.
Besides his visit to the Golden Temple in Amritsar, Badal has been invited by the Akal Takht to serve as “sewadar” for two days at each of the Takht Kesgarh Sahib, Takht Damdama Sahib, and Darbar Sahib at Muktsar and Fatehgarh Sahib.
Narain Singh Chaura, a former Khalistani terrorist, fired at Badal from a close distance on the second day of his penance at the Golden Temple on December 4, but he missed because he was overpowered by plainclothes policemen and subsequently taken into custody.
