New Delhi: The Department of Food and Public Distribution said today that the government is not planning to import wheat from overseas as it has sufficient stocks to meet the domestic demand.
“There is no plan to import wheat into India. The country has sufficient stocks to meet our domestic requirements and Food Corporation of India (FCI) has enough stock for public distribution”, the Department of Food & Public Distribution, Government of India said on Sunday.
According to FCI, state reserves of wheat have declined to the lowest levels in the past 14 years. The retails inflation in India is close to 12 per cent and has stayed above the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI’s) upper tolerance limit of 6 per cent for over 6 months now.
Wheat is a winter crop in India. After the war began in Ukraine, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that India is ready to feed the world. However, scorching heat waves in March decreased India’s production and shot up the prices.
