Farmers’ Strike: Police Detain People Protesting in Guwahati, Farmers Block Chandigarh Highway

Live: The Assam Police have detained some people protesting in front of Janata Bhawan in Guwahati in support of the nationwide strike called by the farmers raising a protest against the three new farm laws.

In Mohali, Chandigarh, some protesting farmers have blocked the Chandigarh Highway. On the other hand, in Mumbai, the President of Mumbai Dabbawala Association Subhash Talekar said that the association supports the nationwide strike. 

The Delhi-Meerut Highway has been blocked by the farmers. The strike has begun from 11 AM and it is likely to run till 3 PM, including transport services, offices, and shops (particularly those who sell vegetables or fruits). The farmers’ unions have declared that it is a ‘peaceful protest’ and they will not stop emergency services, such as ambulances or fire brigades.

Supporters of Congress and Left Parties have blocked railway tracks at several places and holding sit-ins on roads to enforce the strike. In the state of West Bengal, the nationwide shutdown has evoked a mixed response. 

Farmers’ associations have taken part in a public demonstration at Ghazipur-Ghaziabad (Delhi-UP) border as a part of the Bharat Bandh call. A farmer leader says – “If the government can make law, they can repeal it as well. They must work with farmer associations and experts. We’ll leave only after we get it in writing.”
