Jalandhar: Farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal has been put at a PWD guest house in the high-security Jalandhar Cantonment area after he was held by police Wednesday evening. Dallewal was taken to Commando Training Centre in Patiala first and then shifted to PIMS Hospital in Jalandhar at around one and thirty in the morning. The relocation of his camp is happening amid a massive police operation against protesting farmers in Shambhu and Khanauri borders, on which the farmers have been protesting since February 13, 2023.

Punjab Police detained several prominent farmer leaders, including Dallewal, Sarwan Singh Pandher, Abhimanyu Kohar, Kaka Singh Kotident, and Manjit Singh Rai, in Mohali on Wednesday. The arrests occurred when the leaders were returning from a meeting in Chandigarh with a central delegation led by Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. Farmers have become enraged with the detentions.

After the crackdown, police forces of Punjab and Haryana started their effort to evacuate farmers from long-term protest sites located at Shambhu and Khanauri border points. The operation has resulted in sending over 100 farmers to Patiala Central Jail. The Haryana Police has also filed notices pasted outside the farmers’ homes, summoning them to investigate the protests.

After the detentions and site clearances, farmer groups have announced new protests outside Deputy Commissioner offices across Punjab. Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema defended the police action as the trade, industry and the state’s economy were seriously hit by the prolonged highway blockades.

The eviction process continued, and the Haryana security forces used JCB machines to remove concrete barricades from the Shambhu border and open up the Shambhu-Ambala road, which had been shut for over 1.5 years. Farmers have refused to end the agitation, and the situation is tense.
