Speaking of the protest, farmer leader Abhimanyu Kohar made a statement on Thursday that the length of the protest will solely depend on the actions of the Centre, stating that the government has the capacity to address the problem in a short span of time. Kohar added that a parliamentary standing committee has noted that MSP should be given statutory backing and, therefore, there is no reason for the government to refrain from accepting this demand.
On the 38th day of an indefinite hunger strike by farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, Kohar has expressed serious concern over his declining health, saying that he has endangered his life for the farmers. Even though his health has deteriorated, Dallewal continues to campaign fearlessly for the rights of the Punjab people and does not hesitate to put pressure on the government. Kohar said that if the Centre attends to the needs of the protesters, there remains no cause for the people to protest.
When he was asked about the coming months’ protest at Khanauri and Shambu borders, he categorically said that further course depended on the Centre. Once again, he clarified that the farmers are not out on the roads to protest or look for a fight but to ensure that the government delivers on its word for the farmers.
Addressing the recent comments of the Supreme Court about some farmer leaders giving ‘irresponsible statements,’ to the media, Kohar disclosed that the farmer’s leadership had not gone through the observations made in the court seriously. That, according to him, is where the proceedings are important, and whatever was said in court cannot be addressed without seeing the bigger picture.
Kohar also came to the rescue of farmer leaders and said that they have only stated Dallewal’s sentiments about the government and its failure to fulfill the promises made to the farmers. He recalled a recent occurrence when Dallewal, who was in a critical condition, momentarily fainted but insisted on openly registering the worries before the top court via video conferencing.
