A record turnout will envelop the Khanauri border for the ‘Kisan Mahapanchayat’ organized by the non-political arm of Ajnada Samyukt Kisan Morcha to commemorate leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal’s Day 40 fast unto death. The protest calls for legal sanction of MSP and looks into the burning issues of farmers. This Mahapanchayat has been the biggest gathering since the farmer protests of 2020 & 2021 against the Centre’s farm laws that have since been rolled back.
They said the four-lane highway to Khanauri was congested for one kilometer, and three more kilometers of the Sabzi Mandi Road were also choked with vehicles carrying supporters. The massive turnout itself was an indication of the rising support base for the farmers’ agitation that began at the Shambu and Khanauri borders with Haryana on February 13, 2024, and is now approaching its 327th day.
Thus, the movement is more of an issue of mobility and organized pressure than inspiration, as seen from 70 y/o Jagjit Singh Dallewal Saturday. This has seen the self-driven Dallewal demonstrating unshakable determination, which has resonated well with the farming fraternity. They learned of women bowing in reverence even to put up his pictures on vehicles. Most of the public came in order to see the sick leader, who was brought to the Mahapanchayat in an ambulance and was taken to the platform on a stretcher.
The recent ‘‘Dallewal‘‘ fast-unto-death is slowly reviving the movement to deliver degrees the farmers wanted, creating a mass to awaken the government on the farmers’ demands. His coming to Mahapanchayat was as much a declaration to fight and also symbolically the readiness to die if needed. It became a symbol of the continuous fight, the farmers’ uncompromising attitude to the situation, and their joint demand for justice. The protest went on, and now, the farming community has come together under Dallewal.
