Farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who was on an indefinite hunger fast for farmers’ demands, ended his hunger fast by drinking water Friday morning. A major development in the ongoing farmers’ protest was that the Punjab government informed the Supreme Court about its decision.
Punjab’s Advocate General, Gurminder Singh, informed the bench of Punjab consisting of Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh of the situation, who then adjourned the matter. According to him, the protesting farmers at Khanauri and Shambhu borders had been dispersed, and all the previously blocked roads and highways were now open. Every effort of Dallewal has been accepted by the Supreme Court, which commended him as a genuine farmer leader without any political context.
“We are aware that some people did not want a resolution to the farmers’ grievances. The bench pointed out that we are not sitting in an ivory tower, that we know everything and directed the Punjab and Haryana governments to file a status report on the current situation.”
The Supreme Court also asked the high-powered committee, largely comprising former high court judges, to file a supplementary status report attending to the farmers’ issues. The Punjab administration also got relief from the court, which dropped the contempt proceedings against the Punjab Chief Secretary and Director General of Police if they failed to provide medical aid to Dallewal as the court had previously ordered.
On March 19, Sarwan Singh Pandher and Dallewal, among others, some farmer leaders, were reportedly arrested in Mohali as they returned from a meeting with a central delegation. In Punjab, Police had cleared protest sites at Shambu and Khanauri and removed temporary structures, stages and vehicles.
On February 13, 2023, security forces stopped them from reaching Delhi, and farmers had been stationed under the banners SKM and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha at Punjab-Haryana border points since then.
