Mumbai: Baba Siddique, senior leader of Ajit Pawar faction’s NCP, has died after being shot by unidentified persons in Bandra, Mumbai on October 12. Mumbai Police on Sunday morning shifted former Maharashtra minister Baba Siddique’s body to Mumbai’s RN Cooper Hospital for post-mortem, an official said.
Unlike the routine practice of sending fire-arm death cases to state government-run Sir JJ Hospital, the police decided to send the body to Cooper. Highly placed sources attached to the centre confirmed to midday of arrival of the body at 6.10 am at the centre from Lilavati Hospital where Siddique was rushed soon after the incident at 9.30 pm.
A team of forensic surgeons attached to the Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology at Hinduhridaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Medical College, also known as HBT Medical College, along with a post-mortem surgeon of Cooper postmortem centre will conduct an autopsy on Baba Siddique’s body.
The firing took place outside his MLA son Zeeshan Siddique’s office near Colgate ground in Nirmal Nagar, news agency PTI reported citing an official. “Two to three rounds were fired. Further probe is underway as teams have rushed to the area,” the official said. He was undergoing treatment at the Lilavati Hospital which confirmed the news of his death. The incident comes ahead of Maharashtra Assembly elections.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said Mumbai police commissioner Vivek Phansalkar said that two alleged shooters have been taken into custody.
One of them is from Uttar Pradesh and the other from Haryana, while a third accused fled from the spot, the CM told TV channels.
