A day after Tesla, the global leader in electric vehicles (EVs), opened a showroom in Mumbai, Maharashtra, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde was spotted test-driving a brand-new Tesla Model Y on Wednesday. The clean, pearl white Tesla model grabbed much attention as Shinde tried his hand on the car outside the Mumbai Assembly, flanked by media personnel and security personnel. Video footage of the incident showed that the Deputy CM started his test drive slowly and cautiously, videographers being curious spectators to record the process.
The Tesla showroom is the entry point in India by the American automobile giant as it is located at the Maker Maxity Commercial Complex in the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) district. Measuring 4,000 square feet, the showroom is designed in a minimalistic style, with the logo of the brand written boldly in big letters in black on a white background.
Eknath Shinde was also present and locked into the formal launching of the showroom on Tuesday and had welcomed the move of the company by Tesla to enter Maharashtra and had said the company had found the right city and state to launch its operations in India. This shift will be a great milestone, especially since India is the 50th nation where Tesla has begun its operations.
The first model Tesla is launching in India is the Model Y SUV in two variations, where the bookings are set to open shortly. The India plan of the company incorporates not just the establishment of retailing but also the creation of infrastructure and a support system. In terms of setting up the second showroom that will be opened in New Delhi by the end of July, Tesla has already begun recruiting locally and looking at warehouse space.
It was test-driven by the high-profile Eknath Shinde, and with the build-up of curiosity among Indian consumers, Tesla is likely to give a boost to the EV industry in India, particularly in metropolitan cities such as Mumbai and Delhi.
