In the course of their investigation of a large illegal network in the sale of a codeine-based cough syrup, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted a massive raid on Friday, raiding 25 locations in six cities in Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Gujarat, officials confirmed.
Five places were searched in Lucknow, among which were the homes of suspended Uttar Pradesh police constable Alok Pratap Singh, Jaunpur businessman Amit Kumar Singh alias Amit Tata and some other persons involved in the case. An ED officer says that close to 20 officials came to the bungalow of Singh in Swastik City at around 7:30 am and after searching the premises, took documents, mobile phones and other important files that would lead to investigating the case.
Two Varanasi properties of The alleged kingpin Shubham Jaiswal who is thought to be running the syndicate in Dubai were also raided. Police also raided the homes of a chartered accountant Vishnu Agarwal and the local office of Abbott Pharmaceuticals as well as various companies that were under suspicion in the supply chain.
In Ranchi and Ahmedabad, ED teams visited two large pharmaceutical firms that were suspected to have been facilitating or enabling the diversion of codeine based formulations into the black market. Other searches were also reported in Saharanpur and Ghaziabad.
The police further searched the offices located in LDA Colony and Transport Nagar at Edhika Life Sciences and homes of Prasad Jaiswal and Archana Manohar Jaiswal in Kailash Vihar in Sarojininagar into the afternoon.
It arose in February 2024 following a massive raid on an illegal production of Phensedyl cough syrup in a suburb of Lucknow known as Sushant Golf City. The Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) later made subsequent probes that saw the arrest of Vibhor Rana and Vishal who disclosed that there was a larger interstate network. They were first interrogated about the name of Shubham Jaiswal.
