New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (ECI) and the Ministry of Education will soon ink a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to spread awareness about voting rights in schools. This is a commendable initiative, as it will help to educate young people about the importance of voting and their role in democracy.
The MoU is part of the ECI’s Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) program. SVEEP is a comprehensive program aimed at increasing voter participation and awareness in India. The program targets a wide range of audiences, including young people, women, and marginalized groups. “Catching them young. They have turned 18 and have become a voter, but they are not very much aware of voting, ethos, and magnitude. How to vote, whom to vote, and what all considerations are to kept in mind- that background is not ready”, said Rajiv Kumar, chief Election Commissioner.
Spokesperson ECI wrote on X, “Actor RajKumar Rao steps into the limelight again- this time as the ECI’s national icon”.
While making an announcement at an event in Delhi, CEC said actor Rajkummar Rao will be the national icon to spread awareness about voting rights.
The inclusion of voter education in schools is a critical part of the SVEEP program. Young people are the future of democracy, and it is important to educate them about their rights and responsibilities as voters.
There are a number of benefits to educating young people about voting rights. First, it helps to create informed and engaged citizens. When young people understand the electoral process and their role in it, they are more likely to vote and participate in the democratic process.
