Election Commission of India (ECI) will soon initiate the process to hold polls to elect the next vice president after Jagdeep Dhankhar quit the post, sources indicated. Although there is no official statement yet, however, sources said that with the Union home ministry officially notifying Dhankhar’s resignation on Tuesday, the process to hold the election for his successor could commence soon.

The Constitution says in case a vice president dies in office or resigns or is removed, the poll to elect the next person to the office should be held “as soon as possible”. In such a situation, Nitish Kumar, VK Saxena, and Manoj Sinha can be three possible contenders for the position.

Although the possibility for Nitish Kumar to be elected as the Vice President seems to be low, but the rumours are not dying out. Reports suggest that many, including the NDA allies, have suggested he step down as the chief minister of Bihar.

Delhi Lieutenant Governor, VK Saxena has played a crucial role in Delhi’s politics as he became the stumbling block for the former chief minister Arvind Kejriwal.

Lieutenant Governor (LG) of the UT of Jammu and Kashmir, Manoj Sinha, can be considered another contender as he will be finishing his five-year tenure on August 6.

In March this year, Dhankhar was admitted to AIIMS in Delhi for some days after experiencing uneasiness and chest pain. After his hospitalisation, he was advised to cut back his trips outside of the national capital for some time. His resignation letter mentions his health visit as the cause of resignation too. Now, the members of both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, including those nominated, elect the vice president.

From the day the notification is issued, “calling the electoral college to vote”, and till the day of the poll, a period of 30 days is stipulated.
