Aizwal: The Election Commission on Friday revised the counting date of Mizoram Assembly elections to December 4.

“The Commission has received several representations from various quarters requesting for change in date of counting from 3rd December, 2023 (Sunday) to some other week day, on the ground that 3rd December, 2023 being Sunday a special significance for the people of Mizoram,” the poll panel said in a statement.

“Date of counting for Mizoram Elections 2023 has been changed from Sunday to Monday. Details here”, tweeted Spokesperson ECI.

The poll panel had stuck to December 3 as the scheduled day for counting of votes in Mizoram, along with other states including Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Telangana. Major political parties, civil societies organisation and others had urged the poll panel to change the counting date as it falls on Sunday, coinciding with church programmes.

The 2023 Mizoram Assembly elections were held on November 7th, 2023, to elect all 40 members of the Mizoram Legislative Assembly. The fate of the incumbent Mizo National Front (MNF) led by Chief Minister Zoramthanga hangs in the balance.

The key contenders in the fray are the ruling MNF, the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), the Indian National Congress (INC), and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Exit polls have predicted a close contest between the MNF and the ZPM, with both parties expected to win a significant number of seats.

While the MNF has campaigned on its performance in the last five years, the ZPM has capitalized on public discontent with some of the MNF’s policies. The INC and the BJP are also hoping to make gains in these elections.

The counting of votes will take place on December 3rd, 2023. All eyes are now on the outcome of the elections, which will determine the political landscape of Mizoram for the next five years.
