India has been invited to the inauguration ceremony of President-elect Donald J. Trump, and External Affairs Minister (EAM) Dr S. Jaishankar will represent it during the swearing-in ceremony of the 47th President of the United States of America. The inauguration is planned for January 20 in Washington, D.C.; at noon (Eastern Time), President Trump is to take the presidential oath, which will be read by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, John Roberts, in front of the U.S. Capitol.

The Government of India, in a write-up, clarified that Jaishankar would be attending the event, stating, “On the invitation of the Trump-Vance Inaugural Committee, External Affairs Minister (EAM) Dr S. Jaishankar will represent the Government of India at the Swearing-In Ceremony of President-elect-DL Donald J. Trump. Besides watching the ceremony, Jaishankar will also be able to meet other officials from the incoming administration and other leaders attending the event.

Even before the newly elected president, it will be Joe Biden’s vice-president J.D. Vance swearing the oath of office before the inauguration. The Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies (JCCIC) has announced the theme for the 60th Inaugural Ceremonies as “Our Enduring Democracy: A Constitutional Promise.” This theme emphasizes the passion of the Founding Fathers, making the American democratic system sustainable for the generations to come.

For the special event, flags in the country will be at half-mast. The ceremony is anticipated to attract the attention of the world because it symbolises a major political shift in the United States of America.

This meeting also shows that India is fully prepared to expand its bilateral relationship with the United States and also helps Jaishankar discuss many important bilateral and multilateral concerns with the new administration. This event confirms the key role of the Indo-U.S. cooperation in defining the directions of further formation of essential world policies.
